What does he care about going to prison? He’s Black. They like it in there.
Members of Darren E. Reeder’s family wept in a courtroom Wednesday as the prosecution recounted the events of Sept. 14, 2014, the night that the 33-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Hagerstown.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Reeder, Nathaniel W. Hart, 50, of Shippensburg, Pa., was sentenced in Washington County Circuit Court to 13 years in state prison, with five years suspended.
Circuit Judge Donald E. Beachley’s sentence followed guilty pleas entered by Hart to negligent manslaughter by vehicle and failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing serious injury or death.
Hart also was ordered to pay $2,277 in restitution to Reeder’s family, many of whom were in attendance in the Hagerstown courtroom.
“The state is pleased with the sentence,” Deputy State’s Attorney Gina Cirincion said afterward. “We hope that this brings some relief to DJ’s family. We know this pain will continue. We wish we could do more.”
In exchange for his pleas, the prosecution dropped the remaining charges against Hart, including negligent homicide by vehicle while under the influence.
Cirincion said Hart did not stop after colliding with Reeder’s motorcycle in the intersection of West Wilson Boulevard and Virginia Avenue, where a memorial to the Hagerstown man has stood since the crash more than a year ago.
Defense attorney David Harbin told Beachley that no evidence proves that Hart was under the influence at the time of the incident, although the prosecution contended that witness testimony and surveillance video of Hart leaving a nearby liquor store minutes before the crash suggested otherwise.
Hart, a repeat offender with numerous violations on his driving record, left the scene because he was driving without a license, he said.
“He was scared,” Harbin said. “He made a terrible decision.”
