A fifth person, who sources say is the grandson of a former New Haven police chief, has been arrested in connection with the July 4th homicide where the victim’s body was found in West Rock State Park in Hamden following reports of an explosion.

Police tracked down 26-year-old Maurice Wearing of West Haven Tuesday morning. Sources say he’s the grandson of Melvin Wearing, who was New Haven’s police chief from 1997-2003.

Wearing is charged with conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree hindering prosecution, and tampering with evidence.

Police say Wearing and four other people, who were arrested Monday, were involved in the homicide of 39-year-old Edward Brooks. Officials say Brooks was shot at a West Haven home, then taken to a rural area where he was blown up with an explosive. His body was later wrapped in plastic and dumped.
