Richard Dudley called Thursday and said his car insurance carrier, Progressive is going to cover 100% of his loss.
This has been a tough week for Richard Dudley. He came to Columbus to start a new chapter in his life, but a chance encounter with gun wielding homeless man left him starting entirely from scratch.
“We turned down this dead end street and I started praying that I was going to see my son who passed away several years ago, I thought I was dead,” said Dudley.
He came here for a new job and was staying at the Value Place on Victory Drive until he could move into his house. He was putting the last of his items in his car at about 6 a.m. Saturday when a masked man with a gun cornered him in the parking lot and demanded that he drive to Phenix City.
“So I basically spent the next two hours chauffeuring him around to different ATMs because I have an old ATM card and some machines don’t take it. All he kept saying was, ‘you better get me my two hundred dollars or you’re going to die.’ It wasn’t like- get me two hundred dollars, it was- get me my two hundred dollars, like he was entitled to it or something.”
Dudley said he didn’t try to run away or seek help from passersby when he stepped out of the car to use an ATM because he didn’t want anyone else to get hurt.
“When I got out he was like, ‘don’t talk to anybody, because there’s people in the parking lot and I’m not afraid to shoot anybody.'”
He finally found a machine that would dispense the money at the Wells Fargo on 13th street. After grabbing the cash out of his hands, the gunman took the wheel. As he sped off, Dudley ran to nearby apartments for help, but when he called 911, dispatchers told him his attacker had already been arrested.
“I gave them the make and the model and the license plate number and all of that, and they said they were in the process of apprehending the individual as we were talking.”
Boris Norris, 21, is currently in the Russell County Jail, charged with kidnapping and hijacking. Police told Dudley the man was driving like a maniac and ended up crashing the brand new Chrysler 300 just minutes after he left Dudley at the bank.
“Another officer was there and he said that this gentleman had blown by him on broad street doing 80 miles per hour.”
Unable to keep the car on the road for more than a few blocks, it’s no wonder he wanted someone else to do his driving.
Unfortunately, the worst is not over yet for the victim. Dudley is currently in the middle of a divorce and he said his soon-to-be ex-wife recently canceled their insurance without telling him, so now he’s on the hook for the $25,000 he still owes on the car and he has no way to replace it.
