Police arrested a man Wednesday for brutally murdering a woman right in front of her children in a 2011 Norwich cold case.
On December 14, 2011, Jaclyn Wirth was killed at her home at 6D East Baltic Street. After an extensive investigation, and help from the New London County Cold Case Unit, police arrested 33-year-old Lashawn R. Cecil. The Norwich man is charged with felony murder, criminal possession of a firearm, and criminal attempt burglary. He’s being held on a $2,000,000 bond.
As Cecil was walked out of the Norwich Police Department, escorted by the officers and detectives who arrested him, we asked if he had anything to say.
“Not guilty,” said Cecil.
Police say Cecil man shot the 26-year-old right through her apartment door. Officer Scott DuPointe was the first to arrive at the scene.
“You can’t prepare for an incident like this,” said DuPointe. “I mean, the lady was wounded. I mean, I was the last person to speak to her before she had passed away. So it’s something that’s going to stick with me for the rest of my life.”
Wirth’s seven-year-old son Sergio called 911 that night. He is now 10 and his younger brother, Kymani, is now five. Their mom’s aunt, Peggy Lufkin, is raising them. She says they are resilient.
“They can rest in peace a little bit more tonight and not worry that someone is coming after them,” said Lufkin through tears.
This case became personal for all officers and investigators, who are still working this cold case.
