Prosecutors say a man on trial for murder called 911 to report the incident.
During opening arguments in Terrance Hale’s trial Tuesday, deputy county attorney Beth Beninato set the scene for the jury comprising seven men and six women.
Hale, 30, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Raymond Vasholz, 83.
Authorities said Hale broke into the Vasholzes home near 33rd and Martin streets, demanded money and set fire to the residence on Feb. 7.
“(Elizabeth Vasholz) heard a loud crash, the sound of glass breaking in the basement,” Beninato said.
When Elizabeth Vasholz went to the top of the basement steps that morning, Beninato said, she recognized the man as someone who had shoveled her walkway previously.
Beninato said Hale told the couple their home was on fire and demanded money before attacking them. Elizabeth fought back, but when she leaned over to check on her husband, she felt a couch cushion on fire being pressed on her back.
The Vasholzes were taken to area hospitals, and Raymond later died from his injuries.
The defense argues, however, that no one else witnessed Hale attack either of the Vasholzes or start a fire.
