Katelynn was killed when she went to break up an argument between four girls. A stray Black male became involved and then shot her.

In May of 2013, Rockford Police were called to 610 College Ave. for a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Gourley lying in the driveway. Witnesses say they saw Gourley and Boose get in to an argument when Boose pulled out a gun and started shooting.

An autopsy found that Gourley died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
