A 59-year-old Virginia Beach man was convicted on several charges connected to a rape in 2012.
Macie Pridgen with the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office said a jury found Lawrence Anthony Norfleet guilty of two counts of rape, forcible sodomy, object sexual penetration, abduction and false ID to police.
The jury then recommended three life terms plus 26 years in prison for the attack.
In July 2012, Norfleet met a Taiwanese woman who was in Virginia Beach as part of a work-study program. He was waiting for her after work one day. Pridgen said it was raining and he told the victim to go down a side street as a short cut.
Norfleet repeatedly sexually assaulted the victim, beat her and strangled her, Pridgen added.
He then wiped off her bike and glasses and told her that if she reported the attack, no one would believe her because of her nationality,” Pridgen said in a news release.
It took about three days to capture Norfleet. He reportedly gave the first officer he encountered a fake name and birth date and fled from a second officer who tried to stop him. He was later found in the woods.
Pridgen said the victim was able to identify Norfleet in a photo lineup.
Norfleet has prior convictions for sexual battery, assault and battery of a child under 14, robbery, burglary, stalking, strangulation and assault and battery.
He will be formally sentenced after a pre-sentence report is finished.
