The search for the suspect involved in an attempted robbery and carjacking in Gates continued on Thursday.
Police say the suspect attempted to rob a realty office on Chili Avenue Wednesday afternoon before fleeing to Sprucewood Lane and carjacking a woman. The Gates police chief says he then drove the woman into Rochester and ditched the car on the edge of the Genesee River.
Thursday, police said the suspect pushed the 74-year-old woman into the Genesee River after the carjacking — and that she didn’t just fall on her own. That means when this suspect is caught, he’ll face an attempted murder charge.
“Luckily this lady was in great shape and she survived the fall into the water,” says Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode. “And was able to get herself to the side, but clearly this could have been a homicide yesterday. There’s no doubt about it.”
With the suspect still at large — and the victim now released from the hospital — police retraced the suspect’s steps using a K-9 dog and a scuba team to search the Genesee River. We’re told divers were looking for the gun used by the suspect, but that the search turned up nothing.
The chief tells us there is a sense of urgency on Thursday with the suspect still out there.
Chief VanBrederode says, “If you’re faced with a situation where someone is threatening you with physical force or deadly physical force, they’re trying to rob you, is to cooperate and don’t put up a fight because if you resist then things could get a lot worse.”
Chris Horvatits: “So some chance this guy comes into another person’s house today? Maybe does something similar, is that something you’re worried about right now?”
Chief VanBrederode: “It’s in the back of our minds. I wouldn’t panic at this point.”
