Three men have been charged with murder in the shooting death of a Merrillville man who was killed in the parking lot of his apartment complex.

Latrell Dewone McGee, 21, of Merrillville; Devon Jarilone Brown, 22, of Gary, and James Devontae Najee, 22, of Sauk Village, Ill., were charged with murder in the death of Cecil Pendleton, 55, who was fatally shot at about 5:11 a.m. May 6 in the parking lot of Tan Tar A Apartments, 150 E. 59th Ave., the Northwest Indiana Major Crimes Task Force announced in a press release.

Pendleton was shot in his work van and pronounced dead at Methodist Hospitals Southlake Campus in Merrillville.

Investigators learned that several men were breaking into cars in the complex parking lot when they saw Pendleton and tried to rob him, court documents said. Witnesses saw the suspects run from the scene after the shooting and heard sounds of a vehicle speeding from the scene, court records state. Officers found Pendleton after responding to a 911 call of men shooting at a man inside a vehicle.

A fourth man, Tyrone Maynor, 21, of Gary, was charged with assisting a criminal in a case that remains under seal.

McGee has been arrested and is being held at the Lake County Jail. He had an initial hearing on Friday.

After investigators offered a $10,000 reward leading to the conviction of Pendleton’s killer, police received a call May 22 from a man who wanted to remain anonymous. The informant, a convicted felon, told police he knew about a handgun at a residence in the 4600 block of Buchanan Street in Gary and had overheard a conversation about selling a 9 mm handgun, police said. He also heard one of the suspects arguing with his girlfriend about talking on the phone about a murder.
