A Hickory man charged with murder made his first appearance in Catawba County District Court on Friday (November 20).

20-year-old LaKeith Marshaun Lawrence was charged with murder in the shooting death of 45-year-old Philip Eugene McLean on Thursday, Nov. 19.

According to information from the Hickory Police Department, officers responded to a report of a shooting in the 600 block of 17th Street Drive NW in Hickory shortly after 1 p.m. last Thursday (November 19) and found McLean lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lawrence appeared before District Court Judge Richard S. Holloway Friday. He was not given a bond, and Vicky Jayne was appointed as his attorney on a provisional basis. His next court date for a probable cause hearing will be December 11.

Lawrence was convicted of attempted common law robbery in Catawba County in May 2013. He remains incarcerated in the Catawba County Detention Facility.
