A 20-year-old man wanted in connection with the shooting death of a Springfield man earlier this month was located and arrested Friday night by Springfield police.
Darion T. Harris, of the 6500 block of Cherylwood Drive, is accused of first-degree murder in the death of William F. Dougherty, 33.
Police said Saturday morning that they saw a vehicle possibly being driven by Harris at 16th and Ash streets at 11:40 p.m. Friday. Officers followed the vehicle to the area of 14th and Cedar streets and pulled it over. Police said the vehicle stopped but then sped away. Police followed the vehicle for about 1 1/2 miles before the driver eventually stopped in the 2100 block of South Pasfield Street.
The four people inside were removed from the vehicle without incident, police said. Harris was a passenger and was taken to the Springfield Police Department for questioning before being taken to the Sangamon County Jail. The other three people in the vehicle were taken to the station for questioning and were later released.
Harris is one of two people accused in the death of Dougherty, who was shot at his home in the1100 block of North Fourth Street on Oct. 14 and died the following day after surgery at HSHS St. John’s Hospital.
Authorities issued arrest warrants Oct. 20 for Harris and Warren M. Price, 25, of the 2700 block of East Jackson Street. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Price without incident the same day at his attorney’s office.
The warrants accuse both men of first-degree murder, home invasion and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Harris is also accused of armed robbery, police said.
