Lt. Sam Dreher was shot and killed after he confronted his ex-wife’s Black boyfriend about stealing from him.

Michael Minor accepted a plea arrangement of 30 years in prison for the death of a Charlotte County Fire and EMS lieutenant medic Sam Dreher August 4, 2012.

“I truly am sorry, I truly am. And I know it sounds hollow and an apology sounds nowhere close close but I do realize the pain and suffering I have caused so many people,” said Minor at this sentencing Monday.

Minor took the plea after the shooting outside the Saratoga Place Apartments in Sarasota County. Dreher was shot four times and died the next day.

Minor was also sentenced 15 years for burglary and five years for theft to be served concurrently for entering the victim’s girlfriend’s apartment a month prior to the shooting.  He stole items for his then-girlfriend, Danielle Dreher who was the victim’s estranged wife. Minor had an ongoing relationship with Danielle for four years.

Michael Minor was also sentenced to 15 years for burglary and five years for theft.

Sam Dreher’s sister, Cindy Lutz watched in court.

“It’s very hard to be there, to finally see him. But I’m glad we had our day in court, I’m glad I got to speak on behalf of my family, I’m glad he’s going away for a long time.”

As part of the plea, Minor will testify truthfully regarding his conduct and that of Danielle Dreher in the burglary and theft case against her.

“While it would’ve been nice to see Minor go to jail for the rest of this life, this plea deal is very important in getting the other door closed in this nightmare,” said Lutz.

Today’s sentencing took place in Sarasota.
