Alton Police Department described finding the body of an unresponsive White male on 12/7/11.

A St. Louis man pleaded guilty Tuesday to a count of first-degree murder and received a minimum 20-year sentence in the fatal shooting of Tyler Hoppe of Alton.

Assistant State’s Attorney Crystal Uhe said in a hearing that Larry Belk, 22, was going through the pockets of the victim when Nigel Generally shot the victim on Dec. 7, 2011.

Belk pleaded guilty to a count of felony murder, which means that he was involved in the forcible felony, armed robbery, that caused the victim’s death. In exchange for his plea, other counts were dropped.

Belk has no significant criminal record. He fled the area shortly after the killing and was arrested 10 months later in Boone County, Mo. He has been held in the Madison County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail.

Uhe said that Belk and Generally plotted to rob Hoppe, but there were witnesses who were willing to testify if called to the stand at trial. One woman saw the shooting another saw Generally pointing a gun at Hoppe but did not see the shooting.

Larry Belk submitted a guilty plea to the murder.

The women would have testified, had there been a trial, Uhe said.

After he was arrested, Belk admitted his part in the crime, Uhe said.

Nigel Generally of Berkley, Mo., pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in September, the day that jury selection was to begin in his trial for the 2011 shooting death of an Alton man.

Generally was identified as the trigger man in the fatal shooting of Hoppe, 23, of the 1200 block of Hampton Street.

The shooting occurred in an alley behind Hoppe’s house. Hoppe had been alone in the alley behind his home when the two suspects tried to rob him of money at gunpoint about 8:20 p.m.

Detectives with the Alton Police Department said they believed Hoppe tried to resist the men, when Generally shot him in the head. Police said cash was found on Hoppe’s person. He was found lying on the ground near his vehicle in the alley, mortally wounded, and died a short time later at Alton Memorial Hospital.

Hoppe graduated from Alton High School in 2007 and was a member of Laborers International Union of North America Local 397. His family said he worked as a car detailer and was known to be “meticulous” in his job.

The case of Hosie Burgess Jr. of Alton, is pending. Burgess is accused of supplying the gun and ammunition with the knowledge that the other two suspects planned to “do a lick,” street talk for committing a crime.

Belk will have to serve every day of the 20-year sentence, but he will get credit for time served in the Madison County Jail and a short stay in the jail in Boone County, Mo., where he was arrested.

In exchange for Generally’s guilty plea, the prosecution dropped an armed robbery charge and agreed to a sentencing cap of 40 years in prison. Sentencing will take place after a pre-sentencing investigation.

Generally has previous convictions for unlawful use of a weapon and possession of marijuana.
