Earlest A Johnson, the track coach from East St. Louis High School, repeatedly sodomised a 15 year old boy.

A former track coach at East St. Louis Senior High School was sentenced Thursday to two years probation for the attempted criminal sexual abuse of a 15-year-old boy.

Earlest A. Johnson, 35, pleaded guilty to the crime, a misdemeanor, as part of negotiations in which prosecutors dismissed two felony charges of criminal sexual abuse against him.

St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly said the case against Johnson had become “a salvage operation” because Johnson had originally confessed to East St. Louis detective Orlando Ward, who was later convicted of federal drug crimes.

The abuse occurred in Johnson’s home on several occasions from 2011 to 2012, police said.

Johnson was charged in 2012. He will remain on probation through Dec. 9 of 2015.

Kelly said that Johnson’s conviction on the misdemeanor charge would require the former part-time track coach to register as a sex offender, which brought some satisfaction to the victim’s family.
