The brother of a woman who was murdered inside a Reno hotel is speaking out after learning his sister’s boyfriend, who police allege is responsible for the brutal killing, was convicted of murdering his fiance over two decades ago and granted parole just months ago.

Three days after learning his sister Caroline was brutally murdered, James Huffine’s heart turns to the only place he can find comfort. “She had a kind heart. I know my family up in Montana are effected, I could hear it in my sister Phylis’ voice.”
Police say 61-year-old Zollie Edward Dumas admitted to killing Caroline after the couple had a heated argument on June 15, seven months after Dumas was released from federal prison. He was paroled for the 1988 murder of his fianceè in southern Nevada. Connie S. Bisbee, who chairs the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners, released the following statements:
“With respect to the parole process, each inmate is considered for release based on factors specific to his or her case. The board considers the institutional adjustment of each inmate to include disciplinary history as well as program participation, prior criminal history, and release plans.”
“He (Dumas) had a positive institutional record and had stable release plans as reasons for granting parole.”
“Apparently he wasn’t or he wouldn’t have killed my sister,” said Huffine. “He played it 100 percent. Sadly, he played it like a fiddle.”
Huffine admits that he fell for it, too. “Last week I even talked to her, I visited her and even shook the his hand. I thought he was an up and up citizen again, I was even fooled.”
But Huffine said the state should have somehow made Caroline and her family aware about Dumas’ past. “If I had to do it all over again, knowing what I know now, I would have chased him away. Tell him to get away from my sister. You did it once you have no right near my sister.”
“Her life was taken from her, she has no voice. I’ll be that voice for her.”
The Nevada DPS Parole and Probation said Dumas had been reporting to the Reno office monthly, and was considered to be in compliance. The board said its goal in all cases is that offenders selected for parole are able to successfully reintegrate back into the community.
Dumas is currently booked in the Washoe County Jail on a parole violation pending the investigation. No court date has been set and he is being held without bail.
