Blood Moons: a Sign of Victory or Defeat for God’s People?

Will the blood moon be an omen for the race of antichrists?
Will the blood moon be an omen for Israel?

This week the media has been fixated on the upcoming celestial events dubbed “blood moons”. Tonight is the beginning of the “tetrad”, a set of four blood-red lunar eclipses each followed by six full moons. In addition to gaining the attention of star gazers, various religious leaders have declared that the blood moons are a sign from God.

The religious figure who has gained the most attention for these claims has undoubtedly been Pastor John Hagee, who has written an entire book on the subject. For those who don’t remember, Hagee wins the prize for the most vile, mendacious, and outrageous “Christian” supporter of the Jews. Hagee is the founder of Christians United For Israel, and he has rejected Christ and choses instead to worship the wicked tribe that murdered the Messiah and continues to defame his memory.
(If you would like to read up on Hagee’s feeble arguments in favor of the Jews, see here).

If we look at Hagee’s theories about the blood moons, it is not surprising that they focus on Satan’s special people, the Jews.

From the Express:

Pastor and author John Hagee, from San Antonio, Texas, has written a book on the phenomenon. He believes tonight marks the dawn of a ‘hugely significant event’ for the world…

The first Tetrad since the Middle Ages, in 1493, saw the expulsion of Jews by the Catholic Spanish Inquisition, which rocked western Europe.

The second coincided with the establishment of the State of Israel – after thousands of years of struggle – in 1949.

Strangely, the last one occurred in 1967 – far earlier than expected – precisely at the time of the Six-Day Arab–Israeli War…

Mr Hagee explains: “According to the Biblical prophecy, world history is about to change dramatically.

“To get four blood moons you need something absolutely extraordinary in astrological terms.

“Every time this has happened in the last 500 years, it has coincided with tragedy for the Jewish people followed by triumph. And once again, for Israel, the timing of this Tetrad is  remarkable.

“The first of the four blood moons will come on April 15 this year, during Passover. The second will be on October 8, at the time of the Feast of the Tabernacles.

“On April 4 2015, during Passover, we will have another blood moon. Then finally, on September 28, during next year’s Feast of the Tabernacles, the fourth blood and final moon will dawn.”

If we are to take Hagee’s theory seriously, then tonight could signal either a victory for God’s people, like the expulsion of the Jews from Spain, or a defeat, like the Zionist takeover of Palestine. And by God’s people, naturally I mean the true Israel, the Christian Church.

Will the blood moons herald a rebirth of Christendom in Russia?

But of course we should not take Hagee seriously.

Witnessing unusual lunar events during Jewish holidays is not surprising, as the Express article explains:

While NASA has confirmed the astrological validity behind some of the claims, not everyone is convinced the Tetrad means anything at all, let alone the End of Days.

Professor Gary Shogren, a former pastor who studied the New Testament at Aberdeen University, said: “You’ll never go broke predicting the apocalypse.

“An eclipse on Passover night seems wildly improbable, but we should remember that lunar eclipses only happen on full moons and that Passover by definition always takes place on a full moon. Sukkoth (The Feast of Tabernacles) also by definition coincides with a full moon.

“I thought in 2011 we all said we weren’t going to fall for this again, when Harold Camping twice missed the date of the Second Coming?

“It really is no different this time.”

I would add that in addition to making yourself look like a fool, end times speculation is also unprofitable for other reasons.

First, God warns us against trying to pinpoint the exact time when prophecy is to be fulfilled (Matthew 24:36).

Second, trying to calculate the apocalypse does nothing to improve one’s spiritual life. If you die in a car accident tomorrow, it would be your judgment day, regardless of when the world is to end. The meaning of the Biblical message that “The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live“(John 5:25), is that the time to repent and believe is NOW. A fixation on Hagee’s sci-fi nonsense can only serve as a distraction from living and preaching the Gospel.

Third, the focus on such a literal reading of scripture is a mark of the materialistic and Judaizing influences that have corrupted the Church. In traditional Christianity, the Jews were often criticized for their crude and materialistic interpretation of Biblical prophecy, dreaming of an earthly kingdom and earthly glory, rather than the spiritual kingdom promised by Christ.

One of the main verses used by Judeo-Christians when prophesying about the end times is Joel 2:31, “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.” Hagee himself uses this verse in reference to the blood moons. In interpreting this verse, today’s materialistic Christians look to astronomy, when previous generations of Christians looked to the deeper, spiritual meaning of the text. For example, John Calvin had the following to say about Joel 2:31:

We then see that the Prophet does not express what would be, word for word, nor is he to be understood as speaking, as they say, literally, but he uses a figurative mode of speaking, by which he sets forth such a dreadful state of things, that the very elements would put on a new appearance; for the sun would not any more perform its office, and the moon would refuse its light to the earth. As God, then, would take away all tokens of his favor, so the Prophet, by blood, by darkness and by dark clouds, sets forth metaphorically that sorrows by which the minds of men would necessarily be possessed.

Instead of falling for Hagee’s gibberish, simply enjoy the celestial event as another marvel of God’s creation, and trust in the knowledge that He will claim victory in his own time.
