Charles Darwin: “The Civilized Races of Man Will Almost Certainly Exterminate and Replace Throughout the World the Savage Races”

Monday 12 is “Darwin Day” so let’s celebrate the great English scientist with a look at some of his most interesting, politically incorrect quotes.

Here is a fascinating passage from the Descent of Man in which Darwin declares his belief that the “civilised races of man” will “exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races”. Unfortunately, at the distance of 150 years, the opposite now looks much more likely.

The great break in the organic chain between man and his nearest allies, which cannot be bridged over by any extinct or living species, has often been advanced as a grave objection to the belief that man is descended from some lower form; but this objection will not appear of much weight to those who, convinced by general reasons, believe in the general principle of evolution. Breaks incessantly occur in all parts of the series, some being wide, sharp and defined, others less so in various degrees; as between the orang and its nearest allies — between the Tarsius and the other Lemuridæ — between the elephant and in a more striking manner between the Ornithorhynchus or Echidna, and other mammals. But all these breaks depend merely on the number of related forms which have become extinct. At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaffhausen has remarked,[270]* will no doubt be exterminated. The break will then be rendered wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as at present between the negro or Australian and the gorilla.

Note the implication of the last sentence that Darwin saw the negro as intermediate between white people and gorillas.

Today, rap music has made us familiar with the negro’s appreciation for various aspects of the feminine form and, in particular, his preference for what he likes to call “big ass hoes”. According to Charles Darwin, these aesthetic principles have been long practised in Africa, where they have deep cultural roots.

It is well known that with many Hottentot women the posterior part of the body projects in a wonderful manner; they are steatopygous; and Sir Andrew Smith is certain that this peculiarity is greatly admired by the men. He once saw a woman who was considered a beauty, and she was so immensely developed behind, that when seated on level ground she could not rise, and had to push herself along until she came to a slope. Some of the women in various negro tribes are similarly characterised; and, according to Burton, theSomal men “are said to choose their wives by ranging them in a line, and by picking her out who projects farthest a tergo. Nothing can be more hateful to a negro than the opposite form.”
