CNN is now talking nonstop about this meme-maker they threatened.
Instead of retracting the story and apologizing, they are doubling down and pretending that a random guy on the Reddit making a mean meme about them is a news story.
Now that. That is one of the craziest clips I’ve ever seen.
It’s a whole other realm.
For those who have perhaps been asleep for the last 14 hours – CNN’s Kfile last night published a piece about how they had tracked down the anonymous Reddit user who made the WWE meme that Trump posted on his twitter.
They said that they would not release his dox because he posted a forced apology – saying he loves all races and blah, blah, blah, even going so far as to warn others not to follow his path of making memes – but that they were holding the dox and would release them if he started meming again, or said that he wasn’t really sorry.
CNN:
On Reddit, “HanA**holeSolo” took credit for inspiring the tweet. Soon after, “HanA**holeSolo’s” other posts on Reddit, some of which included racist and anti-Semitic imagery, quickly circulated on social media.
Now the user is apologizing, writing in a lengthy post on Reddit that he does not advocate violence against the press and expressing remorse there and in an interview with CNN for other posts he made that were racist and anti-Semitic.
The apology came after CNN’s KFile identified the man behind “HanA**holeSolo.” Using identifying information that “HanA**holeSolo” posted on Reddit, KFile was able to determine key biographical details, to find the man’s name using a Facebook search and ultimately corroborate details he had made available on Reddit.
After posting his apology, “HanA**holeSolo” called CNN’s KFile and confirmed his identity. In the interview, “HanA**holeSolo” sounded nervous about his identity being revealed and asked to not be named out of fear for his personal safety and for the public embarrassment it would bring to him and his family.
CNN is not publishing “HanA**holeSolo’s” name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.
CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.
Interesting note here: the sticking point for their justification of the threat was that he had made a meme identifying Jews who work for the network.
Here’s that meme:
That seems to me to be “statistical imagery,” rather than “anti-Semitic imagery.”
But I digress.
Obviously, there are people all over the internet making memes. There were a lot of people making Trump-CNN memes, because it was the story of the hour.
The issue of the Trump meme was not who made the meme – that wasn’t even their own stated issue with it.
Note: The meme from Reddit made by HanAssholeSolo was a gif. The meme posted by Donald Trump was a WebM, with sound. Meaning HanAssholeSolo didn’t actually make the meme posted by Trump. Theoretically, he made the gif that served as inspiration for the meme posted by Trump. However, it was such an obvious meme to make that whoever made the WebM could very well have made it without ever having seen HanAssholeSolo’s gif.
Note II: The only way CNN was able to confirm this guy’s identity was that he confirmed it. Presumably, he had bad op-sec – apparently, he was linking his Reddit account with his real name Facebook account – but nonetheless, if he would have just not responded to CNN, they never could have proved anything.
Note III: The lying piece of shit Jack Posobiec is saying HanAssholeSolo is a faggot (UPDATE: tweet has been deleted – here’s a screenshot). Jack Posobiec simply makes things up all the time. He is actual fake news. He is just a lying scumbag. If you follow his Twitter, you can see that all he does is make non-falsifiable claims. Occasionally, these turn out to be true, and he then points to the tweet where he made the claim and says “see – I’ve got serious insider sources.” This is his entire gimmick. This isn’t an especially important point, but I just want everyone to know that there is no proof that HanAssholeSolo is a cocksucker. It is a filthy rumor started by the career con-artist and fake news scumbag Posobiec.
There was no “story” in the person who made the meme. Anyone could have made the meme.
What they actually thought they could do – and why they made this a story – was threaten an anonymous person on the internet and thereby strike fear into the hearts of everyone criticizing them on the internet: “if you make fun of us, or if you identify Jews, we will use the resources of our network to hunt you down and threaten you.”
The fact that Trump posted the media was simply an excuse to do this. Presumably, they had been planning it for a while, and were just waiting to be able to find someone who made a high-profile meme so they could do this little “apologize and tell others not to follow you down the path of meme-making or we’ll post your address on TV.”
And it was transparent. They didn’t even try to disguise what they were doing. They didn’t expect anyone to believe that they genuinely though there was a story to be found in the person who made the meme itself. They thought they could put the entire anonymous internet on notice by making an example of someone.
Now, that is clearly unethical, but it is also stupid.
The backlash has been tremendous. Everyone on the internet is like “wait what are you serious? you’re seriously threatening to dox a random anonymous person on the internet if they don’t issue a forced apology? wat.”
Even the Jews!
What I really admire about @CNN is how they can take a joke so well and not desperately try and swing back with some desperate dox attempt.

@CNN U basically coerce apology & threaten release of identity if something changes? Pretty sure a line is crossed here. #CNNBlackmail https://t.co/k4W9AepP6W

Don't worry @KFILE, if you start deleting your tweets I've saved them for you. #urwelcome #CNNBlackmail

The history books will show that on #july4th2017 CNN blackmailed someone who made a joke gif about them. #CNNBlackmail

Maybe this #CNNBlackmail is a great Independence Day lesson about the danger of power and how little you should trust the powerful.

Trump was bad. CNN is worse: CNN threatens amateur satirist behind Trump video: make fun of us again and we dox you https://t.co/KiKX1Gexyu pic.twitter.com/lqpmFHEsYc

Is that normal? Is @CNN essentially threatening to dox him, or am I reading that wrong? pic.twitter.com/7LMMqo1fK5
— Philip DeFranco (@PhillyD) July 5, 2017
@CNN Stop. Rewind. Go back. Do not threaten to dox people in your articles because, like, I'm a big believer in news media but that's effed.
— Hank Green (@hankgreen) July 5, 2017
Note to CNN: random guy making memes isn't the story, *the President using those memes* is.
But this threat from you is now the story.
smh pic.twitter.com/dbnZ0x9jop— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) July 5, 2017
To be clear: A guy has an anonymous account and posts stupid shit. CNN threatens an avalanche of bad publicity if he ever posts again. WOW.

Can someone explain to me why it's cool for CNN to go hunting down name/ID of a random anon who made a Reddit GIF?

This is why you're hated, media. pic.twitter.com/oWn5RYEk6M

Hey @CNN, got a spicy meme, but should I get your approval before I post? Wouldn't want you to threaten to dox my family if you don't.
— Brittany Pettibone (@BrittPettibone) July 5, 2017
Wow, classy move here by @CNN. Threatening to dox a guy over a gif. Wait who's the child again? Thought that was Trump. @KFILE pic.twitter.com/cyJsFz0h7P
— Rachel Stoltzfoos (@RachelStoltz) July 5, 2017
This is the media putting itself in the way of what should have been a far more important "Why is the President doing this" story. https://t.co/D1fdiU9Ksy

CNN & @KFILE are threatening to doxx a random guy tho created a gif but go on about brave gatekeepers. This isn't journalism pic.twitter.com/lrXpCYnx0A

The CNN threat shows the primary concern of the establishment media is policing the public, not informing us

The optics of this are extraordinarily terrible for @CNN. Hunting down individuals expressing their free speech for trashing them? Fascists. https://t.co/CCq5jL7FA8

Wow CNN basically admits it dox'ed this guy. Didn't publish his name (but identified his IRL name just as bad). Wow. https://t.co/asN5HNuYzI

Has @CNN made any effort to dox violent Antifas? Yeah, yeah; rhetorical question.

@cnn's behavior toward some random Reddit poster is evidence of why people hate them. Reap the whirlwind, you evil bastards. You deserve it.

Even some kook from VOX threw CNN under the bus.
I can't emphasize how bad this is on CNN's part. This is basically "don't post stuff we don't like or we'll dox you." Extremely unethical. pic.twitter.com/5bJZIZasH0

Even the psycho tranny serial-harasser “Brianna Wu” was like “WHOA WHOA WHOA.”
Count me among those that find's CNNs veiled doxing threat to Han Assh*leSolo very, very ethically shaky. pic.twitter.com/2KwfJV6Ap9
— Brianna Wu (@Spacekatgal) July 5, 2017
2/ Is revealing his name in the public interest? There's a case for that since it led to threats on journalists – but it's not a great one.
— Brianna Wu (@Spacekatgal) July 5, 2017
3/ Ultimately, this feels like @CNN threatening someone who isn't a public figure to act better or else. It's very unsettling.

Julian Assange has pointed out that this is illegal.

Although I doubt they’ll get charged for it, they have already been convicted in internet court.
The Media is at War with the People
What more than this does one need to understand that the media is at war with the American people?
They are not simply involved in a mind-warfare strategy against us, they are now intimidating us as individuals.
Understand that, all of you: when CNN made this threat against HanAssholeSolo, they threatened each one of you, personally. At any time, they may decide to spend their budget on tracking you down as an individual and “expose” you publicly for making jokes about them.
I have personally been threatened and harassed, had my family threatened and harassed, for years by the media. My mother was forced to move after the media showed her house on television. I was able to get the local “journalist” – who did this after having been approached by the ADL – fired for doing it, but it took a sustained campaign.
As of late, the “journalist” Luke O’Brien, under the pretext of writing a hitpiece on my childhood for The Atlantic, has been going around threatening everyone I know and some people who know people who know me. It’s a similar threat that CNN used here – what he does is call people and say, “if you don’t tell me what I want to know, then you are protecting him, you are complicit and you become a part of the story” – by this he means he will defame them in The Atlantic. It’s a hollow, stupid threat, because of course The Atlantic is not going to print a list of people who refused to talk to them and claim they are all Nazis. It doesn’t really matter that it’s a hollow threat, because the whole point of the “story” is actually just to harass everyone I know as a means of putting pressure on me.
However, the media using this type of violence against me is different. I am a public figure. Applying this principle of “if you get out of line, we’ll come for you and your family” to random anons on Reddit escalates this to a whole other level.
A level to which I believe very strongly CNN is going to regret having escalated it to.
I wish the Gay Fox wing of the internet hadn’t hijacked our “expect us” slogan. But you know what. We don’t even need a slogan.
Just this:
Challenge accepted, CNN.
