The spam filter was catching a portion of normal comments. I have no idea what kind of filtering strategy this app was using, but I was able to test it with “incogman.net” which a user found they weren’t able to link to. Before this testable instance, I had believed comment disappearance was nothing more than an urban myth. Indeed, the filtering did appear random.
What was happening was that when you post certain comments, it would simply refresh the page and your comment would not be there. If you get banned, you will be given a message saying you are banned. If there is no message at all, there is a technical issue.
I will now have to filter thousands of spam comments myself until I find a better solution, so I have turned off comments on articles older than 7 days for the time being (most spambots will attempt posting to older posts as you are less likely to check there).
I apologize for anyone who lost comments, hopefully this has not been going on for long. It was just today I noticed people complaining about it.
