A convicted sex offender believed to be posing as a preacher was arrested Thursday by the United States Marshals Northern Nevada Fugitive Task Force.

An official with the US Marshals says James Edward Bryant, 68, was arrested December 26, 2013, on an outstanding October 11, 2012 California Parolee at Large warrant.

Reno U.S. Marshals were contacted with information Bryant might be in the area. With leads from the public, officials say they were able to locate Bryant.

According to the official, members of the public told investigators Bryant was known in the community as a preacher.

Bryant’s underlying offense is a conviction for sex offenses against a minor under the age of 14, according to the official.

The official says Bryant has a significant criminal history and was considered dangerous.

Bryant was arrested at 541 West 3rd Street #52 by Deputy United States Marshals and the Regional Sex Offender Notification Unit.

Bryant was booked into the Washoe County Jail for failing to register as a sex offender in Nevada and for possession of a dangerous weapon, which was a taser, according to the official.

Following the disposition of local charges, officials say Bryant will face extradition to California for his outstanding arrest warrant. The United States Marshals Service is conducting a follow-up investigation to assess whether Bryant violated federal law as the result of the Adam Walsh Protection and Safety Act of 2006.
