Mike Parcher is covered with bruises after his scuffle with the Black burglar.

Police say a man is dead after breaking into a South Bend home in broad daylight. It happened around 11 Tuesday morning in the 400 block of Corby Boulevard.

Mike Parcher has lived on Corby Boulevard for more than 50 years. He likes his street because it’s close to Notre Dame and in his words, it’s a good place to be on Saturdays in the Fall. But he says he would’ve rather been anywhere else this morning.

“It’s better him than me,” said Mary Ann Sechowski. She lives across the street from Parcher.

She says he was well within rights to defend himself and his property.

“I know he has guns,” said Sechowski. “He has weapons, and evidently he knows how to use them.”

Curtis William Trent was killed during the burglary attempt when the owner caught him red handed.

Parcher didn’t want to talk on camera, but he told us he showed us cuts and bruises on both arms and on his back. He says he got them after the burglar – he caught red-handed – pushed him down the stairs.

Parcher says he drove his granddaughter to work this morning. When he got home, he heard someone else upstairs.

Parcher owns a gun collection, so he grabbed his “22” and climbed the stairs – coming face to face with the intruder in a bedroom.

“I found your guns,” said the burglar.

“I got a gun too,” said Parcher.
