San Diego police have arrested 55 alleged members of the notorious Crips gang who are accused of posing for selfies at murder scenes, and using high school students as drug mules.
On Thursday more than 500 officers took part in a series of raids across the city, in a crackdown on members of one of the most violent street gangs in the U.S.
Among those caught in the raid were several ‘junior members’ of the Crips, who are accused of carrying out a series of revenge killings.
The day of raids led to the arrest of gang leader Randy Alton Graves alongside 54 suspects ranging in age from 18 to 51.
Police say the Crips were responsible for a third of the city’s crime last year and 13 percent of its murder rate.
As well as the arrests 16 guns, 4.5lb of meth and 4,400lb of marijuana, along with $300,000 in counterfeit bills were seized.
‘Today, we cut off the arm of the West Coast Crips,’ district attorney Bonnie Dumanis said.
Several of the suspects, who refer to themselves as 3-Babiez, are accused of the murder of Andres Caldera, a gang member shot at point blank range in the face.
Marcus ‘Missle’ Foreman, Wilbert ‘Coy Blue’ Ross and Terry ‘Caby’ Carry Hollins, allegedly carried out the attack in retaliation for a car jacking.
Members of the 3-Babiez sub-group of the Crips gang, which police say has a hierarchy, are also accused of shooting other gang members for acting as police informants or for being disloyal.
Gang member Meashal Fairley was shot dead outside a nightclub in April last year over his suspected involvement with the police, NBC Los Angeles reported.
The 3-Babiez are also believed to have been behind the murder of Chyrene Borgen. After she was shot dead at a party several of the suspected gang members posted selfies of themselves at the crime scene.
Shortly afterwards, another suspect, Jermaine ‘Tre-O’ Gerald Cook was seen in cell phone footage boasting that the gang would kill anyone, including women.
