Dennis Rodman says he can bring peace between the United States and North Korea. Donald Trump should give him the chance to try and do this. There is nothing to lose.
Dennis Rodman is back in the news again. He is urging Donald Trump to make him an official peace envoy to North Korea.
Dennis Rodman, the American basketball star turned freelance diplomat, has urged Donald Trump to sign him up as a peace envoy to North Korea after his latest foray into Kim Jong-un’s hermit kingdom was scuppered by a travel ban preventing US citizens from visiting.
During an interview in Beijing, from where Rodman had hoped to fly to Pyongyang for his sixth trip there, the former NBA star said US officials had discouraged him from doing so amid continuing tensions between the countries. “Basically they said it’s not a good time right now,” he said.
A state department ban on US passport holders visiting North Korea came into force on 1 September after the death of Otto Warmbier, an American student who was detained in Pyongyang for more than a year. On 29 November, North Korea celebrated its latest intercontinental ballistic missile test, claiming it could now strike anywhere on the US mainland.
However, Rodman, who first visited North Korea in 2013 and calls Kim his friend, claimed that now was the perfect time – and he was the perfect man – to press for peace.
Rodman is the single person on earth who is friends with the DPRK leader and Trump. If there is anybody who can help broker a peace deal it would be Rodman. The fact that he has a past of being a flamboyant and off the wall character is of little consequence. He’s personal friends with both men and that’s what’s critical.
Is Kim Jong Un really such a bad dude? Here he is with Rodman a few years back.
It is clear that decades of American foreign policy towards North Korea has not worked. Sending Rodman for talks is definitely a better alternative than an all out war on the Korean peninsula.
I’ve long speculated that Rodman was unofficially acting on Trump’s behalf. While that may or may not be the case, I fully support giving Rodman the chance to do something in an official capacity. Kim Jong Un is a big basketball fan. Maybe Rodman can make some progress by engaging in more basketball diplomacy. They could do a basketball tournament in Pyongyang or something.
It’s also worth noting that Kim Jong Un is not the insane person the media has been claiming. If he were really insane, he would have been deposed in a military coup some time ago. He’s a much more rational actor than he’s given credit for. The main reason North Korea has pushed ahead with their nuclear and ballistic missile programs is for self-preservation. If the United States hadn’t been invading countries around the world for the benefit of Jews, North Korea probably wouldn’t have felt the need to pour all their resources into these programs.
Hopefully a solution can be brokered. With Trump in office, there is a real chance for a diplomatic reset with North Korea. I say give Rodman a chance and let’s see what comes of it.
