Des Moines Police have made an arrest in connection with the hit-and-run of a Des Moines pedestrian found dead Thursday in a homeless camp.
Donterius Jamar Bomar, 21, of Des Moines, has been charged with attempted murder — a class B felony — in the death of 69-year-old Charles Michael Childs.
Detectives are awaiting additional forensic examination results, and those could result in the charge being upgraded to murder, Des Moines Police said in a news release sent Friday afternoon.
Police said evidence shows Bomar was operating the vehicle that allegedly struck Childs as he walked in the 1500 block of East Madison on Tuesday, the release states. Childs’ body was found nearly two days later in a tent at a homeless camp.
Bomar had been released earlier Tuesday from Polk County Jail, where he had been held for a month on charges related to a Dec. 8 incident at the Bethel Mission, a men’s emergency homeless shelter at 1310 6th Ave., in Des Moines. Bomar allegedly attempted to enter the shelter, but he was refused service and asked to leave the property or be arrested. He was charged with trespassing and interference with official acts at the shelter.
