Detroit: Old White Man Who Devoted His Time to Caring for Cats Beaten Nearly to Death

The Hamtramck ‘Cat Man’ was loved by all. It is unknown if he will survive.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced today that De’Vante Howard, 14, of Hamtramck and Martell Dewberry, 13, of Detroit have each been charged with one count of assault with intent to murder. Both have been designated as adults for sentencing.

Hamtramck Police Chief Max Garbarino said the 55-year-old victim was assaulted around 11 p.m. Saturday on the 23000 block of Danforth. A neighbor called 911.

Nicknamed Casper, the victim often moved from house to house in Hamtramck and was known for taking care of stray cats, Garbarino said. Police did not release his real name.
