Just before jury selection was to begin Monday in the stabbing of a man outside the 7-Eleven near Kennedy Plaza in 2015, the defendant changed his plea to guilty.
Araya Brinkley, 54, was charged with second-degree murder, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. A news release from the R.I. Attorney General’s office said Monday that Brinkley will be sentenced Nov. 27. There was no plea agreement, spokeswoman Amy Kempe said.
The state was prepared to prove that Brinkley stabbed Troy Henderson, 41, of Newport and Providence, 15 times outside the convenience store at about 2:30 a.m. on May 23, 2015.
