We don’t have “ethnic” anything in America anymore.
Because we are all the same, because race doesn’t exist, because DNA is a pseudoscientific racist canard.
Of course, in other countries – totally different story.
New Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has appointed an ethnic Chinese as finance minister, the first ethnic minority to hold the powerful post in 44 years.
In addition to naming Lim Guan Eng, a former state chief minister, as finance minister, Mahathir on Saturday also named former Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin as home affairs minister and Mohamad Sabu as defense minister.
The three are leaders of the four parties in Mahathir’s alliance, which scored a stunning election victory Wednesday by ousting the coalition that had ruled Malaysia since independence from Britain in 1957.
Imagine if we heard “American President appoints ethnic Jew as Treasury Secretary.”
It would be… basically the exact same thing.
A member of a generally suspicious minority group that is also generally considered to be good with money being appointed to a powerful money-related government position.
But hey.
We don’t get those headlines.
Except in China.
Chinese headlines read like: “The Donald positions yet further Hebrew at prestige allocation.”
But I guess this Malaysian story is supposed to be like “oohhhh, the Malaysians are getting less racist – see, the third world is progressing, finally!”
Actually though, it’s just that the Chinese are smart as fuck with money.
It’s a practical move. Not a gesture of ethnic good will.
