One of four men wanted in connection with the videotaped beating and armed robbery of a French Quarter tourist last month has been arrested, New Orleans police said Monday (Nov. 10).

Edward Doyle, 27, was booked with armed robbery after an NOPD narcotics detective spotted him in the doorway of a Bourbon Street nightclub Monday around 3 a.m. Police said Det. Jason Collins recognized Doyle from a video of the mid-October incident and detained him with the help of two other detectives working in the French Quarter.

Doyle is one of four suspects police say surrounded a 27-year-old man walking by himself Oct. 12 around 4:30 a.m. in the 800 block of St. Louis Street. The victim was thrown to the ground, punched, kicked and robbed at gunpoint of his wallet and a Cartier gold watch worth more than $10,000, police said.

Police obtained an arrest warrant Oct. 17 for another suspect in the case, 23-year-old Bruce Jones. The other two suspects have not been identified and remain, with Jones, at large, police said.

Investigators said Doyle initially identified himself by the false name of “Raymond.” But police said Doyle eventually provided his real name and police said he “confessed to detectives his role in the incident.” An arrest report said Doyle identified himself as one of the attackers in the video, and also said he was caught holding “a clear bag containing a white powder” that was submitted to the NOPD’s crime lab for narcotics testing.

Doyle’s bond was set Monday afternoon at $50,000. Court records show Doyle was sentenced to one year for driving a stolen auto in January 2004, five years for auto theft in January 2005, two years for drug distribution in January 2009 and got a concurrent six month sentence for escape in June 2010.

Authorities ask anyone with information on Jones or the case to contact NOPD 8thDistrict detectives at 504.658.6020 or Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111. Video of the incident can be viewed below.
