Former Bavarian Premier Says Merkel had No Democratic Legitimation for Her Asylum Policy, Says She is Splitting Germany

Former CSU leader Edmund Stoiber had made unusually strong criticisms of Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel. Stoiber told Der Spiegel that the policy of the federal government had split Germany.

Something of the inner togetherness is starting to shatter. He blamed Merkel. She had “no explicit legitimation for bring about such a change.” If the people feel they are not being taken seriously, there is a threat that the centre will be further radicalised. Germany has never been so isolated in the EU.

If Germany continues on its present course, right-wing populism will be promoted in other countries, said the CSU’s honorary chairman. “If Angela Merkel doesn’t watch out, she will soon be sitting at the table with Beppe Grillo, Geert Wilders and Marine Le Pen.”

Actually Beppe Grillo just announced his retirement from politics. Stoiber was the premier of Bavaria for a long time and leader of Merkel’s Bavarian sister party, the CSU. He was a candidate for the federal chancellorship but lost the election.
