As Wayne McClellan entertained guests at his boyfriend’s apartment Saturday night, his partner was dead in a bedroom closet.
Sunday morning, McClellan flagged down a Chesapeake officer and told him the location of John “Jack” Craig’s body, kept inside his home in the Independence Square Apartments.
Officers found the 53-year-old’s body tied up in the closet, with his arms behind his back and a knot around his neck. A plastic bag covered Craig’s face, which “ultimately led to [his] death,” according to court documents obtained by 13News Now.
McClellan, 49, did not indicate that he knew anything about the death initially. But later confessed to killing Craig to assist in a suicide, according to the court document.
Neighbors said he and Craig had been a couple for several years.
“From the day I moved in, Jack just, like, he was just the nicest guy ever,” neighbor Porche Moody told 13News Now. “He would always tell you about his partner, so it wasn’t a secret, like, it wasn’t anything that no one knew about. We all knew who Wayne was.”
“It was always, ‘Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, Wayne,'” said Marquita Smith. “It’s just sad, like, you never know — sleeping with the enemy — you never know.”
The last time neighbors remembered seeing Craig was Thursday.
Portsmouth officers said McClellan robbed the Rite Aid Pharmacy located at 2004 Victory Boulevard shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday. They released surveillance footage that detectives say shows McClellan robbing the store. Police said he indicated he had a gun, got money from an employee, then ran.
Neighbors told 13News Now that later in the day Saturday, McClellan returned to Craig’s apartment where he and others had a party.
