The returning officer for the state of North-Rhine Westphalia has announced that there were serious errors in the counting of votes in the recent elections. Ballots were miscounted in 80 voting districts.
Moreover, the pattern of error was non-random. The “far lite” AfD party was affected in more than half of the cases discovered. The AfD was disadvantaged by mis-counting in 50 voting districts. Had the ballots been counted correctly, it would have gained an additional 2204 votes. “Some errors give the impression of not being completely random.” said Markus Tiedtke, deputy returning officer.
Other parties were also affected by the mis-counting, but only slightly. The Left should have had an additional 128 votes, the Socialists 170.
The voting operation was run by 110,000 volunteers. North-Rhine Westphalia is one of the most Muslim-colonised parts of Germany.
The AfD got 7.4% of the vote, which earned it 16 seats in the state parliament. According to the investigation, the errors did not affect the distribution of seats.
Still, this indicates that the suspicion of electoral fraud intended to disadvantage patriotic parties is justified. The phenomenon is real.
