On Wednesday evening, a group of five dark-skinned men sat down and had drinks at the “Piano” pub. The group was there for the first time. Albayrak [the owner] didn’t know them. They drank “eight beers, two vodkas” and put everything on a tab. When Albayrak want to collect payment, there was anger. “We are Somalis, we don’t pay,” they reportedly said. Two men stood up and went out. Albayrak banned the other three from the establishment and threw them out. “They were aggressive, they were upset,” says Albayrak. The pub owner then shut the door.
With his last guest, a regular, Albayrak went into the next room. He was just reckoning up when he heard a noise from outside. There was a “boom, boom”. Albayrak looked out cautiously and saw how two people with iron rods were beating on the pub door. The publican believes he recognised the aggressive guests. “I was afraid they were going to kill me,” says the 58-year-old.
He called the police 2.16 am. The pub owner waited for help. Albayrak and the regular guest waited half an hour for the police. “The police only arrived at 2.45 am,” says Albayrak.
