The glorious leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new luxury apartment complex in Pyongyang.
There was much fanfare about this big media event in North Korea. Many had thought that it would involve the military. A new weapon? A new military strategy perhaps? Turns out it was something entirely unexpected. Kim Jong Un opened up a luxury apartment complex in Pyongyang. They even had a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the event.
The penthouse apartments at the top of the tallest tower in Pyongyang’s showpiece development offer impressive views, ice green wallpaper and purple sofas – but had no hot water when the project opened on Thursday.
Ryomyong Street is the third prestige project in as many years in the North Korean capital, and by far the largest, said to have nearly 5 000 apartments, which according to authorities will be distributed free to deserving citizens.
Its name translates as “illumination” and the official KCNA news agency described it as “an icon of modern street architecture and a fairyland representing the era of the Workers’ Party”.
The white concrete towers come in multiple shapes – square, round and octagonal – and sizes, the tallest proclaimed as 70 storeys and 234 metres high.
Leader Kim Jong-Un – who made the project a priority – opened it on Thursday in front of an audience of tens of thousands of citizens and an invited coterie of international media.
The symbolism behind this is very interesting. You might remember back in 2014 when Dennis Rodman went to North Korea for an exhibition basketball game. This appeared to be an olive branch extended to Barack Obama who had an affinity for the game.
Sending Dennis Rodman to North Korea for peace negotiations would be cheaper than sending a navy armada!
This seems to be a similar type of situation. It looks as if Kim Jong Un is extending an olive branch to Donald Trump. Since the United States refuses to conduct any real diplomacy, they are left with making symbolic gestures. They figure that Trump who made his fortune in New York real estate might appreciate the skyscraper complex.
Much of what we hear about North Korea in the Jewish press is propaganda. They call Kim Jong Un a mad man and claim continuously that he wants to start a nuclear war.
This narrative is silly. It is difficult to believe that anybody could lead a country for as long as he has while being an insane mad man. Unlike the United States, he has not launched preemptive wars against other nations. North Korean military tests are simply designed to show power in order to deter an attack from the United States.
We’ll see how this develops but this navy armada sent by Trump to provoke the North Koreans is counterproductive. He’d be better off asking Rodman if he could help negotiate a peace settlement!
