We should probably chill-out on this nuclear thing, no?
Or I mean, I guess we could just go ahead and have a nuclear war. Could be lulzy.
RT:
Mikhail Gorbachev has called the current state of relations between Russia and US the “collapse of mutual trust” and urged the sides to resume dialogue and push towards demilitarization and complete nuclear disarmament.
“I think the world has approached a dangerous threshold. I would prefer not to suggest any particular schemes, but I want to say: we need to stop. Dialogue should be resumed. Stopping the dialogue has been the biggest mistake. Now we must return to the main priorities, such as nuclear disarmament, fighting terrorism and prevention of global environmental disasters. Compared to these challenges everything else is a second priority,” Gorbachev said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
“Of course, at this moment it is difficult to talk about moving towards a nuclear-free world, we must honestly admit it. But we should not forget: as long as there are nuclear weapons there is the threat of their use. It could be an accident, a technical malfunction of someone’s evil will – a madman or a terrorist,” the former Soviet leader said.
Gorbachev also reminded that in line with the nuclear non-proliferation agreement all of its signatories must hold talks on nuclear disarmament uniting the eventual full destruction of nuclear weapons.
“The nuclear-free world is not a utopia, but rather an imperative necessity. But we can achieve it only through demilitarization of politics and international relations.”
He said that veterans of international politics, such as the “council of sages” chaired by former UN leader Kofi Annan, understood these problems and he expressed hope that their voices would be heard by modern leaders. At the same time he emphasized that the main responsibility for global security lied on these modern leaders who would make the greatest mistake if they do not use the last chance to return international politics to a peaceful course.
The interview was published on Monday and timed with the 30th anniversary of the USSR-US summit in Reykjavik, which eventually allowed the nuclear arms race to slow down and greatly contributed to the end of the Cold War.
Meanwhile, China has officially endorsed Russia’s position on Syria, meaning they probably won’t side with the US if they decide to start a World War with Russia.
RT:
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has publicly backed Russia’s positions on “the most important” global issues, including Moscow’s take on the Syrian and Afghan conflicts. It stressed that the two keep close contact as fellow UN Security Council permanent members.
Speaking at a briefing on Sunday, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong said that Russia and China had been working closely together in the United Nations Security Council, sharing similar views on events both on regional and global levels.
“China and Russia hold similar positions on the most important international and regional issues, including on Syria and Afghanistan. The sides, being permanent members of the UN Security Council, continue close cooperation on international and regional issues,” Li Baodong said.
Being the only non-western member of the UN Security Council besides Russia, China has been taking Moscow’s side on heated and highly debatable issues.
On Saturday, China’s ambassador to the UN, Liu Jieyi, expressed his regret that the Russia-sponsored resolution on Syria, which was vetoed by UN Security Council, did not pass the vote, while calling it “comprehensive, all-encompassing and balanced” document.
“China voted for the draft resolution and regrets that it was not adopted,” the UN envoy said, as cited by TASS.
The Russian draft was voted down by nine votes to four, with two other UNSC members abstained from the vote. A rival French-sponsored resolution, that proposed a no-fly zone to be imposed over Syria akin to that in Libya in 2011 that led to the brutal assassination of Muammar Gaddafi, was vetoed by Russia. China was the only Council’s permanent that did not cast its ballot for or against the draft. Angola followed the suit, while another non-permanent member, Venezuela, sided with Russia and voted “no.”
I think China would do their best to stay out of Hillary’s planned World War. But the nature of World Wars is that they involve the whole world.
So, if they’re forced to choose sides – and they would be – they’re not going to choose our side.
This is a complete mess.
Anyway. Could be that after the war it will be interesting af.
