Jobbik is now claiming to be the second biggest party in Hungary. This isn’t so much a claim as it is a fact, given their having placed second in the last election cycle.
Radical nationalist Jobbik has by now become the second strongest party in Hungary and “this tendency is growing,” the leader of the party said on Monday, after a party board meeting. Disputes are “raging” within ruling Fidesz, Gábor Vona told a press conference, while the political left has completely fallen apart.
In their stead, Jobbik has become the most stable political force, he insisted. In connection with the upcoming by-election for a vacated parliamentary seat in Veszprém on 22 February, he said that although the city was a Fidesz “stronghold”, he was optimistic Jobbik would prevail.
The by-election will be held for taking up the parliamentary mandate of Tibor Navracsics, of the ruling Fidesz party, who became EU commissioner in October 2014. On the other by-election set for 12 April in the Tapolca ward in Veszprém County, Vona said that constituency is “an exciting battlefield” where the race was wide open.
Vona said there was “thirst for peace in Hungary” and the response to that is a well-defined programme offered by a “composed force.”
The question now is, how much have they or will they compromise, ideologically, in order to make the distance between second and first party? Hopefully not much.
