An 18-year-old is jailed on a capital murder charge in the overnight shooting death of a young woman in south Huntsville, authorities said.
Joseph Earls is held in the Madison County jail in connection with the slaying of 19-year-old Samantha Coyner, Huntsville police confirmed.
Coyner was lying in the road when police were called around midnight to investigate a shooting on Hillwood Drive at Chicamauga Trail. Coyner died at Huntsville Hospital this afternoon, said Lt. Michael Johnson.
A witness told police they were there to do a drug deal but left before completing the transaction.
Johnson said a suspect vehicle followed Coyner. After a confrontation, someone from inside the suspect vehicle started shooting, Johnson said. Coyner tried to drive away but was shot.
