So Trump had this meeting on DACA with a bunch of Democrats earlier this week, and everyone appears to be freaking out about it – like he’s going to allow this to go through.
Here’s the full video.
I don’t think this is happening. I think in this meeting, the things that bothered people were part of a negotiations process.
CNN is confused that he was contradicting himself.
CNN:
President Donald Trump appeared to contradict himself multiple times in a meeting on immigration with a bipartisan group of lawmakers Tuesday — a reflection of growing frustration from Capitol Hill about the lack of direction from the White House on the issue.
The President at times suggested he would be looking to sign everything from a stand-alone fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — set to expire in March — to comprehensive immigration reform, often appearing to being guided by lawmakers in the room to modify his positions.
The comments came during a nearly hour-long conversation between the roughly two dozen lawmakers, the President and White House staff that the press was allowed to record — a window into the difficult negotiations that still surround the issue of replacing DACA, which protected young undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children from deportation, and border security.
At the end of the session, Trump suggested that ultimately, he would sign whatever he was presented with.
“I think my positions are going to be what the people in this room come up with,” Trump said. “If they come to me with things I’m not in love with, I’m going to do it. Because I respect them.”
He was just going along with what anyone said.
At one point, he even acted like he was taking Feinstein seriously.
I don’t know for a fact that he won’t do something on DACA. But this meeting doesn’t mean anything. I didn’t even bother to report on it yesterday because I was like “meh.” But now I see people flipping out about it.
Here’s the deal: he knows that he won’t win a second term if he does DACA. Even if he builds the wall – or starts building it – people will not go along with DACA.
The only way that it would make sense is if he got absolutely everything else related to immigration in return for it – Moslem ban, end to diversity lottery, end to H1-Bs, end to family reunification, refugee refusal – and there is no way the Democrats are going to agree to that.
What he’s doing is making himself look reasonable so he can later show the Democrats as unreasonable. I am not sure who he is putting this show on for exactly (presumably the media and the members of the GOP that support DACA), but it’s obviously a thing that he is doing. Just watch the video and watch him agree with everyone and tell me he isn’t putting on a show.
Remember he did this once before, a couple months ago, and we are no closer to DACA than we were then.
He is attempting to show that a government shutdown would be wrong, since he’s willing to talk about DACA. I just don’t think that the people he is attempting to convince actually care.
Basically, he’s employing negotiating tactics which worked for him in business in a place where they probably aren’t going to work. But he’s not just all of the sudden agreeing with Feinstein and Schumer.
Once again: he might do DACA. I have no way of knowing what he is going to do. I am just saying that this particular meeting is not relevant to the larger situation.
