“It is Not Diversity That is Destroying Our Society, But the Fear of Diversity. No European is More European Than Any Other.”

In this interview with Federica Mogherini (the EU’s external affairs commissioner), here we see a classic illustration of the inability of our ruling class to come to terms with the failure of their ideology. They cannot acknowledge a distinction between statehood and peoplehood. All non-Europeans are allowed such a distinction. No one claims that Jewishness and Israeliness are exactly the same thing. There are Jews born in Europe. No one says they are not Jews. There are Arabs in Israel. No one says they are Jews. But the words traditionally used to refer to European peoplehood – French, British, German, etc. – have been hijacked and made to refer to statehood instead, citizenship status. If Europeans try to insist on a distinction between their ancestral peoplehood (the equivalent of Jewishness) and their statehood (the equivalent of Israeliness), they are told they are evil like Hitler.

Do you fear tensions between the local population and the Muslim communities in Europe?

Mogherini: I have been criticised because I said that Islam is part of Europe. It is time to recognise that these are Europeans citizens, born in Europe, who grew up in Europe. If we paint the culture war on the wall again we show that we haven’t learned the lesson of the last two decades. When we portray the problem as “We Europeans, we Christians against them, the Muslims, Arabs, terrorists”, it warps our view of reality. We are speaking here about Europeans. We also confirm the narrative of those who want to show us that coexistence is possible.

What do you mean by that?

Mogherini: What are the values that we say the terrorists are attacking? The fundamental values of Europe are these: the ability to work together, live side by side, even when we differ from one another in nationality, culture and religion. These are exactly the values that enable us to live together after thousands of years of wars. We have shown that coexistence is not only possible, but also a source of peace and well-being.

So there is no culture war?

Mogherini: If we fall into this trap of simplification, we destroy our values. It is not diversity that is destroying our society but the fear of diversity. Clearly that also imposes an obligation. We must invest so that everyone feels included. There is no European that is more European than any other.

“No European is more European than any other”. This is a pure expression of intellectual genocide. It denies the very existence of peoples as ancestral communities. All of the struggles our ancestors engaged in, the battles they fought, the choices they made, everything that made them distinctive, counts for nothing. They have no more entitlement to their own land than an African or Arab con man, recently arrived on a boat, who got a bit of paper from the government saying he was British or French or Belgian.
