The new James Bond movie is apparently the most expensive film ever made, with an advertisement budget significantly bigger than the production budget. In order to break even, it needs to gross $650 million, Variety reports.
It probably will make that much. People like these films. It made $73 million opening weekend. The last film, Skyfall, grossed over a billion total, and made $88 million opening weekend.
This may well be Danial Craig’s last appearance as Bond. He has says he’s got other things he wants to do, and hasn’t signed a contract for another film in the series.
If he quits, we all know what comes next: Jamal Bond.
The amount of noise around the positioning of Idris Elba as the next Bond has been so loud, it is inevitable. They are demanding it be done for social justice.
Example of this noise, from The Mary Sue:
Mirror UK’s sources report that Damian Lewis of Homeland and Wolf Hall is the “number one choice” to take up the iconic role after Daniel Craig steps down. Lewis is a talented actor; I’m sure he’d be a suave and charming James Bond. If true, it’s just disappointing that the franchise seems adamant that James Bond has to remain a white male, and that the higher-ups decided to forego the opportunity to do something revolutionary with a traditional character. Even if they don’t use specific words to describe Bond (see: “too street”), it’s pretty clear that they’re maintaining a very narrow construction of the Bond character.
James Bond is an iconic figure of English masculinity, which hasn’t always been the best thing. Isn’t it time to start expanding, or even challenging that image? James Bond can be gay (the “What makes you think it’s my first time?” scene in Skyfall!) and/or black. James Bond could be a woman. James Bond could be a lot of things and still be an amazing agent. Thoughts?
Jamal Bond was a done deal as soon the Anthony Horowitz, who now writes the new bond novels, came out and said Elba was “too street” to play Bond. He of course apologized immediately, but you can’t come back from that. Now, no matter what, if they don’t make him Black, it will be racism.
The question here is, how on earth can a Black man carry a billion dollar film?
It is clearly impossible, and it’s going to be fun to watch. The studio will try to weasel its way out of it. They are trying to put it off for a couple years by getting Craig on for another film, but even if that happens, Jamal Bond is inevitable.
The Daily Show is in the midst of a crisis with this Black they replaced Liebowitz with.
Within the first four weeks, the show’s viewership has dropped 37%, according to Nielson ratings.
Save for a few Blacks who have been funny (such as Eddie Murphy in the 80s), people do not usually want to watch Blacks.
The issue here is, no matter how much you brainwash people to love the Blacks, when it comes to passive decision making, such as which show you don’t flip the channel on or which move ticket you buy, people will still choose non-Blacks.
Black Daily Show is probably going to collapse the network, which had already lost Stephen Colbert. But it will be an even bigger deal if Jamal Bond – who, by the way, prefers dat azz shakin, not strrrr – bombs completely and costs the studios hundreds of millions of dollars.
It will then totally end the franchise forever, as it will be considered racist to make the character White again.
Because everything must go Black and never come back.
