Jews Leaving Turkey Due to Rising Antisemitism

The unease among young Jews in Turkey was apparently aggravated by the notorious “one minute” spat between Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Israeli President Shimon Peres in Davos, in a reference to a debate between the two men when Erdogan accused the Israeli leader of "knowing well how to kill" before storming out of the venue.

A perception of rising anti-Semitism and deteriorating relations between Turkey and Israe prompt an increasing number of young Turkish Jews to emigrate to Israel, the US or Europe, a Jewish leader told Hurriyet daily newspaper.

Nesim Guveniş, Deputy Chairman of the Association of Turkish Jews in Israel said anti-Semitism is triggered by harsh statements from Turkish leaders.

According to him, this unease went before the Mavi Marmara incident and was aggravated by the notorious “one minute” spat between Turkish Prime Minister Recept Tayyip Erdogan and Israeli President Shimon Peres in Davos, in a reference to a debate between the two men when Erdogan accused the Israeli President of “knowing well how to kill” before storming out of the venue.
