The intersection of politics and sports interests me a whole helluva lot more than sports themselves.
The first time I took notice of this was when China used the 2008 Olympics to roll out “New China.”
It was incredibly effective at negating the imagery people had of China as a brutal communist dictatorship where slaves toil in sweatshops for 50 cents a day to make plastic crap for American consumers.
Russia has tried to do the same thing with the Olympics and now the World Cup. But Russia is at a massive disadvantage, because they are hated a lot more than China.
Honestly, I think the whole thing is basically a waste of time. I think that instead of attempting to portray themselves as “democratic” and “just like the West, really,” they should be framing themselves as a more traditional European alternative to the West.
There is presumably a hesitancy to do this because of the fact that this was the strategy of the USSR, which probably a lot of Russians view as having failed.
But we are in a different world now.
And the actual differences between Russia and the West are differences that if they are embraced and promoted, would resonate with a lot of people.
Just as an example, they are always on the defensive about the gay thing.
They try to explain it away, or minimize it.
At least that tends to be the official line from the Kremlin when addressing the anti-gay laws to an international audience.
I think they should be on the offensive. I think they should aggressively state that they make no apologies for defending traditional Christian values, and it is the West that should be explaining why the hell they are allowing homosexuals to mass sexually abuse children, and promoting this as good.
The similarities between the average ethnic Russian and the average white American Trump supporter are uncanny. And to me, it is the most obvious thing in the world that Russia should be making that point very loudly.
RT, the main international propaganda outlet for the Russian government is apparently trying to appeal to leftists, but it seems very confused in its direction.
If I were pouring however many hundreds of millions of dollars a year into international propaganda, I would make RT basically a Breitbart/Infowars clone. I would focus on presenting Russia as a traditional Christian European country. I would show the Russian people as a reflection of America and Europe’s past.
Putin will say these things domestically about white genocide.
But he isn’t pushing them internationally.
Obviously, Putin is pretty much the smartest man on the planet, but he can’t think of everything. And I don’t think he is listening to the right people on the whole “international image” front.
People in the West are almost begging Russia to shift their strategy of presentation.
Remember when PEGIDA marched in Germany chanting “Merkel to Siberia, Putin to Berlin”?
He is naturally understood by those in the know for what he is, but then you have ostensibly right-wing figures like Trey Gowdy going along with anti-Russian conspiracy theories.
That could be nipped in the bud, easily, if Russia took a different, more aggressive approach to promoting its own value system as an alternative to globo-homo-gayplex.
They are allowing used-up old cold war memes to be used against them for no clear reason. They could easily be countered.
I’m not saying that hosting the Olympics or FIFA is a bad move. I think it’s fine, in itself. But it represents a larger trend, which seems to ignore the strengths of Russia and focus on attacking the strengths of the Globo-homo.
This is a system that does not allow for diversity of ideology, which they are trying to work with, when they should be going 4th gen and using their strengths to appeal to the people of the societies they are in conflict with, rather than their ruling classes.
Anyway, just some Sunday thoughts.
