Hayley Watton said she was left “shaking” after the incident.

A 22-YEAR-OLD woman has spoken of her terror after being robbed at knifepoint outside a Derby supermarket.

Hayley Watton said she was left “shaking” and her heart “was racing” following the armed robbery at the Sainsbury’s cashpoint in Boyer Street.

Miss Watton said she did not even realise anyone was behind her as she withdrew cash at 7.30pm on Tuesday.

But after he snatched the cash she struggled with him for a few moments and suffered a cut to her hand from the ‘Stanley’ knife he was carrying.

Miss Watton said: “I was shaking, my heart was racing and I just went into some kind of automatic mode where I chased after him for a short while before thinking to myself ‘hang on he’s carrying a knife’ and stopping.

“I got back and went inside the store to tell them what happened and they started looking through their CCTV while I called the police.

“It all happened so quickly and I suffered a cut to my hand in the struggle.

“The police have taken a swab of the blood in the hope they can get some DNA and recognise who it was that did this.”

Miss Watton works as a housing officer for Derventio Housing Trust in Boyer Street.

She said that since the robbery she looks out of the window at work and sees the cashpoint where the offence took place.

She said: “I work locally and seeing the place where it happened is a constant reminder and brings the incident back to me.

The attacker gave her a warning slice with a stanley knife, to show he meant business.

“The police have taken a statement, the swab and I was also driven around the area in a police car immediately after it happened to see if I recognised anyone but I didn’t.”

Police say Miss Watton was standing at a cashpoint outside Sainsbury’s Local in Boyer Street, Derby, when a man approached her from behind.

A spokesman said: “He leant in front of her as her cash was being dispensed and snatched the small amount of money she had withdrawn.

“The robber had a ‘Stanley’ style knife with a one inch blade and, when he leant in front of the victim, he caused a small cut on one of her hands.

“Miss Watton was not seriously injured but was left shaken by the incident.”

The offender was black, in his late-20s, about 5ft8in or 9in, and of slim to medium build.

He wore a mustard coloured hoodie or coat with dark trousers or jeans and dark footwear.

After taking the money, he ran off along Farm Street and on to Wood Street.

Detectives investigating the robbery want to hear from anyone who recognises the description or saw the offender in the area.

Witnesses to the offence or anyone with information should call Derbyshire police on 101, quoting incident 648 of October 14.
