Apparently, there are movie theaters still open somewhere.
Instead of $400 million opening weekends, they’re struggling for $4 million opening weekends.
Liam Neeson’s turn as older action star continued over the weekend as his film Honest Thief collected a solid $3.7 million in its U.S. box office debut.
The movie, which marks the first release from Tom Ortenberg’s revived Open Road Films, topped yet another quiet frame in terms of moviegoing amid the ongoing novel coronavirus pandemic.
As of last Friday, Seattle theaters were allowed to open, whereas New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Saturday that cinemas outside of New York City can open if they are in counties meeting certain criteria.
Honest Thief has earned a total of $4.2 million when factoring in Canadian grosses.
“Moviegoers, particularly couples, came back to theatres to enjoy Honest Thief in a theatrical environment and were rewarded with a movie rated 88 percent on the audience score from Rotten Tomatoes,” said Ortenberg, who recently relaunched Open Road with Josh Green’s Raven Capital.
The movie played particularly well in Miami, Chicago, San Diego and Atlanta.
101 Studios’ The War With Grandpa took in $2.5 million in its sophomore session for a 10-day-domestic total of $7.3 million.
I really like these ridiculous Liam Neeson action films. I haven’t seen this one yet, but I’m sure it’s just as good as all the rest. It’s literally just the same movie over and over again.
I hope when I’m 68, I’m going on exciting and violent adventures like Liam Neeson.

Christopher Nolan insisted that his film “Tenet” be released in theaters back in September, and that made $20 million. Honest Thief is the second biggest opening. Most of these films are either being held for the future, or released on streaming services.
Of course, the movie theater industry is completely dead and isn’t coming back. Everyone sort of probably knows that, unless they are living in total delusion. The only reason some of the theaters are open is that right now, the lockdown rules are still determined by cities and states. When it is eventually put in the hands of the feds, they will shut it all down.
Unless, of course, Donald Trump wins the election and goes off the reservation and starts getting rid of this crap. That is possible.
However, even if that happens, people are going to be too broke to go to the theater.
The good news is, they’re going to keep pumping out material for these streaming services in order to keep the people from rising up. Some of it will probably be less politically correct than what we’re used to, since they want to make sure all types of people are too comfortable sitting at home, or in their pod, to riot and make demands.
