A Gresham woman initially suspected of manslaughter in the killing of a Washington man at her apartment complex is now accused of murder, court records show.
An indictment filed Monday in Multnomah County Circuit Court charges Schwanna S. Waters, 23, with murder in the Valentine’s Day shooting of John Romanger, 25, of Cathlamet, Washington. The shooting occurred around 1 p.m. in the 900 block of Southeast 187th Avenue.
Prosecutors now allege in the indictment that Waters intended to kill Romanger and that it occurred while trying to rob him. When Waters was initially arrested, she was accused of recklessly killing him in an unintended shooting, court records show.

Police have not released information on what led to the shooting. Waters reported to court staff at the county jail after her arrest that Romanger was a stranger to her.
