We must hold back the armies of Mordor!
While we’ve previously reported that Google was recently pressured to change their algorithms to bury holohoax-denial sites, the malevolent tech giant has manifestly decided to go full out and declare war on the enemies of the Jews.
They have raised a mighty army to swarm us, presumably with the goal of destroying the world of men.
Google is using a 10,000-strong army of independent contractors to flag “offensive or upsetting” content, in order to ensure that queries like “did the Holocaust happen” don’t push users to misinformation, propaganda and hate speech.
The review of search terms is being done by the company’s “quality raters”, a little-known corps of worldwide contractors that Google uses to assess the quality of its systems. The raters are given searches based on real queries to conduct, and are asked to score the results on whether they meet the needs of users.
This is, in this case, a bold faced lie, of course.
Anyone who searches using the query “did the holocaust happen” is obviously interested in finding revisionist materials.
The Jews have only recently started complaining about this because they would never type in that query into Google themselves, and thus never found out about it.
Oy vey! How could anyone question the holocaust! This is an outrage!
In other words, Google’s search system was already working fine and giving people what they wanted. The goal here, of course, is to make sure that people looking for evidence that the holocaust is a hoax can’t actually find what they’re looking for.
One story in particular highlighted how a search for “did the Holocaust happen” returned, as its top result, a link to the white supremacist forum Stormfront, explaining how to promote Holocaust denial to others.
That exact search result is now included by Google as one of the examples the company now uses to train its contractors on how and when to mark pages as “upsetting-offensive”.
“Upsetting-offensive.”
Right.
Since when, exactly, has Google made it a policy not to return “offensive” materials on people’s search requests? Let’s see here…
The second result for “ISIS” returns a page marked “WARNING: GRAPHIC,” containing videos of torture, beheadings and other ISIS atrocities.
Just go in image search and type any disturbing thing that pops into your head, and you’ll see that Google has absolutely no compulsions about showing you the most horrible things.
The raters’ rankings do not directly feed back into search results, however. Instead, the data collected is used by Google to help judge the success of algorithm changes, and is also part of the corpus used to train its machine-learning systems.
Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Land, said: “The results that quality raters flag is used as ‘training data’ for Google’s human coders who write search algorithms, as well as for its machine-learning systems. Basically, content of this nature is used to help Google figure out how to automatically identify upsetting or offensive content in general.
What this means, ultimately, is that Google is trying to make algorithms that automatically filters out results they deem “politically incorrect.” If they relied on this human army to actually determine what the engine ignores, they would simply be playing an eternal game of whack-a-mole, with new sites popping up forever.
If they succeed (and there’s no reason to doubt that they will, eventually), we will need to ensure we have alternative modes of spreading our memes.
The good news is that our reliance on Google is already minor; our own troll armies are constantly on the offensive, invading other sides and social media platforms, spreading our messages through trolling, stunts and word-of-mouth.
And while I don’t expect we can convince anybody to stop using Google, if we just spread the meme that “Google censors its results,” we could probably get people to understand that when they’re searching for “politically incorrect” information, they’re better off using alternatives.
PS. I don’t know why, but for some reason the Stormfront thread is back on the first page of Google. Are they trolling us?
