A man who killed a Dallas cop 14 years ago is scheduled to die for the crime Wednesday.
Licho Escamilla, 33, killed Kevin James on Nov. 25, 2001, outside a Dallas nightclub in the Bachman Lake area near Love Field. James, 34, was working off-duty security at the club. He had just gotten married the month before his death.
Retired Dallas police Maj. Scott Bratcher, who was James’ supervisor and friend, and a few other Dallas officers will make the trek to Huntsville for the execution. Escamilla’s death warrant is effective at 6 p.m.
“It’s way overdue for him to be executed,” Bratcher said.
James became a Dallas cop in 1995. When Bratcher was a sergeant, he hired him for the northwest bicycle unit even though James didn’t have as much experience as others on a specialized unit.
The two became friends, and Bratcher said his decision to hire James paid off.
“He was a great bike officer,” Bratcher said. “Everything we ever asked him to do, he was there.”
Bratcher said he and James went to events together and got to know each other’s families. Bratcher’s family attended James’ wedding.
