A police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop in the San Francisco Bay area Wednesday morning.
Sgt. Scott Lunger, a 15-year Hayward police veteran and father of two, was responding to an erratic driver about 3 a.m. with another officer when the routine stop turned deadly, authorities said.
“As Sgt. Lunger got out of the car and approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, the driver shot Sgt. Lunger without warning,” Chief Mark Koller said at an emotional press conference.
The second officer was able to return fire into the suspect’s vehicle before that driver sped off, only to dump his vehicle in the nearby city of Oakland, Koller said.
Mark Estrada, a 21-year-old Oakland man who police say has gang ties, was later arrested in the attack.
