Mike Walker: ‘The Return of Odysseus’

Mike Walker is a playwright, poet and the former editor of the highly respected magazine ‘The Scorpion’.  His latest play ‘The Return of Odysseus’ is a presentation of Homer’s tale of the return of the King of Ithaca to his homeland, which is being plundered and despoiled in his absence by foreigners. The tale represented here, with archetypal protagonists who are also believable human beings, has an obvious relevance to Europe today.

Michael Walker can be credited with being THE man who brought continental anti-capitalist ‘right-wing’ thinking especially of the Nouvelle Droite/New Right schools into the English speaking world, and he did this through his editorship of the now legendary magazine ‘The Scorpion’, where writings by such as Alain de Benoist, Guillaume Faye, Drieu la Rochelle, Pierre Vial, Robert Steuckers, Pierre Krebs etc etc, (many of whom are now published in English by Arktos books), were first translated into English and this achievement has somewhat dwarfed his writing for the theatre, but ‘Hitler’s Temptation’ a moodily atmospheric tale about the Fuhrer’s private life did achieve plaudits.

The play ‘The Return of Odysseus’ is a traditional setting of the Greek tale and is true to Homer’s account, focussing on the sufferings of Ithaca during the King’s absence, and the ridicule and humiliation faced by those who remain loyal to the old ways, the old ideas and the absent King. ”Odysseus WILL return!” is the cry, often only whispered, of all those who still guard their honour, and the honour of their country above petty material considerations. There’s something about the way the play is written so that as we read, the modern world slips away and we find ourselves there in the Ancient world of the Greeks, there – longing for the King’s return, there – yearning to have our vengeance on the suitors of the Queen and the despoilers of the land and its riches, there – waiting, hoping, praying that our chance will come to put right what is wrong. The tension mounts, the play builds to a crescendo and the end does not disappoint. In years to come ‘Odysseus will return!’ may well become a watchword to all those who seek to free the world from the evil clutches of those destroyers who currently enslave it.

Come and listen to the extracts read here, come my friends,  ’tis not too late to build a better world, so let us be strong in will, and let us strive and seek and find… and never yield. “Odysseus will return!”
