After two days of hardcore drama, the mainstream media has finally picked up on the Alison Rapp #Mintgate whoring scandal.
The angle?
She’s the victim of evil internet Nazis, of course.
There are literal textbooks for online harassment, the original dating back to 1999. These “ruin-life” guides include tactics from doxing and SWATing to placing endangering or annoying ads in online classifieds.
As popular as those techniques remain, however, online harassers have learned that they can cause far more damage with a slightly less flashy and more methodical approach — you might even say the “hottest new trend” in harassment is opposition research.
The latest high-profile victim is Alison Rapp, formerly a spokesperson for Nintendo of America. Rapp has been in the crosshairs of an online mob since fall, when Nintendo changed several female characters in American versions of its games to make them less sexual. Critics wrongly assumed that Rapp, an outspoken feminist, was involved, and launched a very public investigation into her personal life. In between deconstructing her Amazon wishlist, surfacing anonymous social accounts and circulating copies of her undergraduate thesis, the self-styled investigators also found evidence that Rapp was working a mysterious second job — for which she was fired from Ninetendo on March 30.
The undergraduate thesis was a defense of sex with children, by the way. The article’s author, Caitlin Dewey (a social justice journalist who also writes about anti-Semitism and racism for Jewish publications), never mentions the fact that Rapp is a child-sex advocate, as it makes the narrative of victimhood she’s pushing much more difficult.
Unrelenting, the mob kept looking for more dirt on Rapp. On Sunday, they found and republished what they claim is her listing on an escort service.
“The amount of obsession it must take to dig up old tweets, find addresses, link me to anon things not related to games is … not normal for a professional industry,” Rapp tweeted on March 30.

And the fact is, Rapp is a political activist who infiltrated an organization to push a political agenda, meaning that her personal values are relevant. It is also very possible that she obtained the high-profile position through her position as a prostitute, which is would be a form of extremely serious corruption on the part of Nintendo, a powerful multinational corporation, which is also relevant.
“This is mean” is not a real argument here.
There is, to be clear, no indication that the listing is real: It doesn’t show the escort’s face or real name, and Rapp hasn’t publicly confirmed or denied it.
The refusal to deny it is an indication it is true. We also matched her tattoos, and found that the metadata on the camera used to take the hooking pictures matches that of the camera used to take Rapp’s weird pedophilic glamor shots.
She is also wearing the same scarf in one of the hooker pics as she’s worn as herself.
So there is definitely “indication” it is real.
But regardless of whether or not the woman in the listing is actually Rapp, the fact that someone dug it up says a lot about their tactics. Either Rapp’s critics trawled the Web looking for dirt on her, without even the help of public records or reverse-image search … or they combed through escort listings until they found an ad that could arguably pass as hers.
In both cases, it represents a ton of very meticulous, calculated work — of the sort we’re used to seeing from professional opposition researchers.
The anti-Rapp campaign also shares its ethical logic with professional oppo: Namely, that people in public positions (of any sort) should be held publicly accountable.
In this case, however, as in many others, that logic is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how much power Rapp actually had. She was initially targeted under the belief that she was personally responsible for changes in “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Fire Emblem Fates” — that she had some outsize influence over a cultural product and was thus deserving of criticism. In reality, Rapp was a marketer who has repeatedly said she had “no involvement” with game localization.
Such blunders are not, however, particularly uncommon in the brave new world of Internet oppo. Fomented by new platform rules against conventional doxing and the ease of digital research, many self-styled activists have begun taking very personal aim at the individuals they see, rightly or wrongly, as the agents of some much larger problem.
Both 8chan and Kotaku in Action regularly crowdsource research into the histories of private individuals who’ve done little more than post about feminism on social media.
Unfortunately, it can be hard to see how disproportionate and damaging the technique is when your side is the one doing it. Certainly Rapp’s investigators, of whom there appear to be several dozen, do not believe their Eros escort site “revelations” constitute harassment.
They fail to recognize that just because someone makes a product that is publicly accessible — or worse, because someone is tangentially and distantly involved in the making of a product that is publicly accessible — does not mean that they themselves should be, in their entirety, accessible to the public. And the mere fact that something can be publicized is not ethical justification for doing it.
When you post hooker profiles on the internet that are publicly accessible, you can’t hardly whine when someone finds them.
And again: Rapp was not simply a Nintendo employee. She was a political activist working at Nintendo in a capacity to push a political agenda.
Her semi-public life as a hooker is fair game for political opponents.
She is the definition of “had it coming.”
Why the Rapp Scandal is Relevant
Several people have asked me why I am spending time on this scandal. I gave the following response to a commenter questioning the importance of this issue:
Firstly, there are 20-something new articles today, just as every day. If you don’t like this one, don’t read and comment on it.
The reason for the article – as I am being asked to explain it, apparently it isn’t obvious – is three-fold.
One: We have made an example of this woman and her husband. She attempted to push an agenda on society, and her life was destroyed. Other people are seeing this. We are letting people know that going against us can result in having your life destroyed.
Two: Victories should be celebrated. We are reveling in our victory. We have not only a right, but a duty to do this.
Three: Gamergate is a popular subculture that shares many of our values, and covering issues where we overlap is extremely important for the process of pulling these guys into our movement.
What’s more, this is fun.
And we deserve to have fun.
I will also add that it is extremely instructive as to the mindset of feminists.
Our Sacred Duty to the Truth
Though commenters have been on a rampage accusing Rapp of being a Jew, there is no definite proof that she is a Jew. This “everyone is a Jew” reasoning has been a serious problem for a long time, and I would ask people to stop accusing people of being Jews without documented evidence.
“I think she looks Jewish” is fine to say, but saying “she is a Jew” without proof is simply spreading potential misinformation, and should be avoided. We must value the truth – that is our greatest strength.
I don’t know if Rapp is or is not a Jew, but this “must be a Jew” reasoning comes up a lot when addressing subversive women. This appears to be male feminism rearing it’s head again, with White activists claiming that an “Aryan princess” would never act like this. White women will and do act like this. The nature of women, when released from the patriarchy, becomes extremely destructive to society. Of course we should always remember that it was the Jews who initially destroyed the patriarchal White system, so they are ultimately responsible for all the destructive behavior patterns of White women.
We have a duty to the truth, and we need to honor that duty by fact-checking and making certain the claims we make are accurate.

And she literally argued in favor of child-sex, then attacked a non-profit anti-child sex trafficking organization – run by a victim of child sex trafficking – when they called her out on it.
But she is the victim.
This is the epitome of the feminist mindset: destroy everyone and everything you come in contact with, then pretend to be an innocent little victim when called out by nasty Nazi boys.
The next step here is figuring out how long she was involved in prostitution and connecting that back to when she got her job at Nintendo.
I think it is more likely than not that one of her Johns got her the job.
