Ash Carter now says that the hospital bombing was definitely done by the US and probably on purpose and they are very sorry.
Ash Carter now says that the hospital bombing was definitely done by the US and probably on purpose and they are very sorry.

This whole story is so bizarre and retarded.

No idea why they bombed the hospital in the first place, but then saying they didn’t, then saying they did, then saying it was on purpose, then saying it wasn’t, then just saying sorry – this makes it all so much dumber.

Reuters:

The Pentagon chief said on Tuesday the U.S. military “deeply regrets” the loss of life in an American strike on an Afghan hospital in Kunduz and is acknowledging its mistake and working to understand what went wrong.

“The U.S. military takes the greatest care in our operations to prevent the loss of innocent life, and when we make mistakes, we own up to them. That’s exactly what we’re doing right now,” Defense Secretary Ash Carter said in a statement.

“We will do everything we can to understand this tragic incident, learn from it, and hold people accountable as necessary,” Carter said of Saturday’s strike that killed 22.

New York Times:

The American commander in Afghanistan now believes that United States troops probably did not follow their own rules in calling in the airstrike that decimated a Doctors Without Borders hospital when no American and Afghan troops were in extreme danger, according to officials with direct knowledge of the general’s thinking.

Under the rules, airstrikes are authorized to kill terrorists, protect American troops and help Afghans who request support in battles — like those in Kunduz, recently taken over by the Taliban — that can change the military landscape. The idea is to give troops leeway but keep Americans out of daily, open-ended combat.

The Special Operations Forces most likely did not meet any of the criteria, the commander, Gen. John F. Campbell, has said in private discussions, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Why did they even do this? They had to have known they were bombing a French hospital. How was no one like “wait are you sure, this could maybe cause a problem possibly”?

I mean. Especially in the middle of trying to take the moral high-ground over Putin for bombing terrorists. It is really bad press to intentionally bomb a hospital.

There isn’t even a war in Afghanistan anymore. It is “low-intensity conflict.”

The French are calling this a war crime, which it obviously is.

This situation really speaks to the idiocy of the hardline “conspiracy theorists” who believe every event is planned and that there are secret geniuses running Western governments for some purpose other than “burn this bitch down.”
